I am an experienced Maths teacher with a very unique career background which drives my teaching style and enthusiasm towards the application of Maths; showcasing its purpose and importance in many career options. Engaging students with the direction of what they are studying, will allow learning to take place more easily and makes it fun! I have experience teaching GCSE’s, A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate (MYP and DP) as well as assisting my science department teaching a few Science Modules as part of an Applied Science BTEC.
I studied Veterinary Nursing and Practice Administration at the University of Bristol and then became the Head Veterinary Nurse of a referral hospital leading a team of 3 Veterinary Surgeons and 12 Veterinary Nurses (organising and assisting the days surgeries and medical care of outpatients and inpatients). I was then unexpectedly given an opportunity to coach Netball full time to aspiring National athletes who were also studying A-Levels or BTEC full time. In addition to our successes as a team on court (frequently earning national and regional titles across both College and School competitions), I was fortunate to support and develop the players self-management skills and establish and monitor academic/athletic goals without compromising one for the other. It was during this role that I decided to move into education with Maths being the focus due of the negative comments the players shared with me about their experience learning Maths. Having utilised calculations, percentages, statistics and data, amongst other skills, in two very different careers, drove my passion for Maths and its perception by students.
I love teaching Maths and growing a student’s own excitement for the subject no matter their ability or starting point. I have a particular interest in teaching skills to a mastery level through investigations and inquiry tasks and guide them towards a mindset of confidence and resilience to explore and make critical decisions during multistep problem-solving questions. Maths tends to only be fun when we have experienced success, so I always ensure that students feel successful yet challenged in my lessons.
